With Jamaica’s rich tropical climate, many delicious and tasty fruits have been able to thrive on the island. Some of these fruits include the pineapple, jackfruit, banana and orange, which can all be found all across the island.

Not only are these fruits delicious, tasty and enjoyed by many, but they also provide several health benefits. In another edition of Our Today‘s feature series, we explore the health benefits that Jamaica-found fruits are able to provide, and, for today, the focus is on the soursop.

Beloved by many Jamaicans, the soursop, a fleshy and delicious fruit, is grown in countries such as Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru and Panama.

Stabilises blood pressure

Soursop is a fruit rich in potassium. Intake of this chemical helps to ease tension in blood vessel walls, which in turn, can lower blood pressure.

In addition to this, the more potassium you eat, the more sodium you lose and sodium is a chemical element known for contributing to an increase in blood pressure.

Aids Digestion

A fruit rich in fibre, soursop is able to aid the digestive system. The fibre intake from the fruit increases the weight and size of the stool. With a bulkier stool is easy to pass making constipation less likely.

Helps with inflammation

Like fibre, the soursop is rich in antioxidant properties. These antioxidants help the body to repair cell damage and fight against inflammation.

May prevent diseases

Rich in Vitamin C, soursop intake can prevent the onset of colds and flu. In addition to this, this fruit is high in antioxidants which can help to lessen oxidative damage that may result in chronic diseases such as cancer.

Helps to fight bacteria

Studies have shown that this fruit contains antibacterial properties. Research has also shown that soursop intake can fend off several types of bacteria, including strains that cause gum disease and cavities.

May prevent kidney stones

Having high amounts of potassium helps to prevent the formation of kidney stones. Kidney stones can lead to urine blockage, as well as the swelling of the kidney.
