LeBron James

No folks, let’s not follow the online chatter. Instead let’s wait for Forbes magazine before calling LeBron James a billionaire.

Despite its beef with Kanye West and Kylie Jenner in recent years, the magazine is still the most reliable in calculating the net worth of the world’s wealthiest (outside of a personal accountant with access to all the books, of course).

But that isn’t to say that the landmark the NBA great has now reached isn’t a remarkable achievement as well.

According to reports circulating today, Kurt Badenhausen of Sportico.com has reported that James recently passed the $1-billion mark in career earnings, with US$330 million in salary for his work on the basketball court and $700 million from endorsements, his various business ventures and other off-the-court deals.

Michael Jordan

That’s a pretty big achievement for the star of Space Jam: A New Legacy, who has been chasing Space Jam star Michael Jordan’s legacy since he first entered the NBA in 2003.

But with Forbes last estimating his net worth at $450 million in 2018, 36-year-old James hasn’t quite matched Jordan’s billionaire status just yet.

However, he can take pleasure in the fact that he is the first to earn over US$1 billion while still an active player in the NBA, when Jordan, the current owner of the Charlotte Hornets and many other business ventures, was only able to pass that earnings mark after his playing days were already over.

At 58, and with 18 years passed since the Chicago Bulls legend last suited up for the Washington Wizards, Jordan is currently estimated to be worth $2.1 billion.
