Fashion icon, multifaceted, inspirational, visionary, trendsetter – these are just a few words that can be used to describe the man who was Manfred Thierry Mugler.

To celebrate his life and the many masterpieces he created, here are the Top 10 creations from the House of Mugler.

10. LES INSECTES’ COUTURE COLLECTION SPRING/SUMMER 1997

Jennifer Lopez and others such as Beyoncé have rocked this 1997 butterfly-inspired design by the fashion icon.

9. WHITE FUR-COAT ENSEMBLE

This look complete with two white poodles, was one of his most fabulous pieces, and could be considered a more trendy piece, unlike his typical iconic looks.

8. ARCHIVAL FEATHERED GOWN

Cardi B (Red Carpet Fashion Awards)

This Archival gown was worn by rapper Cardi B at the 2021 opening of Mugler’s exhibit.

7. GOLDEN METALLIC SUIT

Celine Dion (Good Morning America)

This type of piece can be spotted in the music videos of some pop stars. Celine Dion wore this golden metallic ensemble for her Courage album shoot cover. Not only has it been rocked by Dion, but Beyoncé as well.

6. SPRING/SUMMER 1992 RED COWGIRL

Bedazzled leather chaps complete with matching cowboy hats and bustiers was inspired by western culture.

5. WET DRESS 2019 MET GALA

Reports are that Mugler came out of retirement to customise this piece for Kardashian for the 2019 Met Gala. This Wet Dress, since its first wear, has become quite legendary.

4. MOTORCYLE CORSET SPRING/SUMMER 1992

First worn in George Michael’s Too Funky music video, this suit defines the great capabilities of Mugler. Diva Beyoncé for her I Am…Sasha Fierce photoshoot is seen rocking Mugler’s iconic motorcycle corset. Beyoncé over the years has supported the designer, with many of her tour costumes designed by him.

Mr Pearl, a South African corset maker, along with Thierry, created this piece.

“This was sort of a combination of fish, bird and beast. It was probably the most intense project, it took six weeks working 24 hours a day. So it’s 12 weeks, in fact. There was day shift and night shift. We were 20 people,” said Mr Pearl to Dazed in 2016.

3. SPRINE/SUMMER 1992 THE VENUS DRESS

Cardi B (Vogue)

This piece inspired by Italian Renaissance artist Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, was first worn by model Simonetta Gianfelici at his anniversary show.

2. LA CHIMÈRE GOWN FOR FALL/WINTER 1997

Mr Pearl assisted Mugler with this project.

This is one of the most expensive pieces in fashion history.

1. SPRING/SUMMER 1995 ROBOT WOMAN

This iconic costume was presented as part of Mugler’s 20th anniversary ‘Cirque d’Hiver’ collection. This look, which has even been worn by the likes of Beyoncé, cemented Mugler as one of the most iconoclastic designers of all time.
