Jamaica’s novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis continues to explode as the island surged past 20,000 cumulative cases in the last 24 hours.
According to data provided by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, 243 new cases were confirmed on Tuesday (February 16), bringing the national total to 20,016.
It took eight months from the time Jamaica first confirmed a COVID-19 case in March 2020, to hit over 10,000 cases later on November 18. The island reached another 10,000 cases, however, in less than three months, with some 3,503 new cases confirmed in the last 12 days.
Jamaica is currently managing 6,696 active cases of the coronavirus, an increase of 183 (or a 0.3 per cent rise) when compared to yesterday.
While the ministry noted that all 14 parishes confirmed new COVID-19 infections—St James, with 60 recorded cases, saw the biggest jump, followed closely by Kingston and St Andrew, 52; Clarendon, 21; as well as St Catherine and St Thomas tying at 19 apiece.
In the meantime, 12,735 persons have made a full recovery from the infectious disease, with 381 patients dying from coronavirus-related complications to date.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness further indicated that 270 persons are hospitalised at this time. Of the total number of admissions, 21 patients are classified as moderately ill, while another 23 have been designated critically ill.
