222 new COVID-19 cases recorded

The latest weekly report on the number of COVID-19 cases in Jamaica indicates that an additional 222 cases of the virus were recorded between January 24 and 30.

Jamaica has seen an increase in COVID cases since the start of the year, with the number of cases being recorded each week surpassing 100.

In addition to the 222 new cases recorded, there were four deaths that occurred between May 2021 and January 2023 that were confirmed in the latest report. The total number of COVID-related deaths now stands at 3,484. There were no new coincidental deaths cited and no new deaths under investigation.

The majority of the newly reported cases continues to be recorded in the Kingston and St Andrew area, with the latest report indicating 66 new cases in both parishes. St Catherine recorded 40 new cases, while Westmoreland recorded 27.

St Ann recorded 23 new case, St James had 16 cases and St Thomas 10 new cases. The remaining parishes saw single-digits of new cases with Manchester recording nine new cases, Hanover eight cases and St Mary seven new cases. Additionally, Trelawny saw six new cases last week, while Portland had five, Clarendon three and St Elizabeth had two new cases.

Though the number of cases remains high, persons who have contracted the virus are recovering. The report indicates that 56 people recovered from the virus last week, leaving 371 active cases across the island.

As it relates to the seven-day positivity rate, there has been a slight decline compared to the previous report. The positivity rate now stands at 18.1 per cent, a decrease from the 19.1 per cent reported last week.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness continues to urge vaccination among citizens in Jamaica, with vaccination sites located in all 14 parishes. Booster shots are also being encouraged for those who have already been vaccinated.
