Minister of Education and Youth Fayval Williams says work is still being done to abolish the shift system in public education schools.

Williams, who was speaking at a press conference hosted by the education ministry on Wednesday, October 18, said 32 of 38 schools are still currently using a shift system.

“I know that there is some incorrect information out there, prior to the pandemic when I asked about shift schools the number I got was 38 during the process. Where we are right now with the work that has been done there are 32 schools still on shift,” Williams said.

Williams said the Black River High School in St Elizabeth is among the schools that have been removed from the shift system after building additional classrooms, expanded teacher staffrooms, labs, and bathrooms.

She added that Bridgeport High School in Portmore, St Catherine is to be removed from the shift system in the coming year.

“This school year, two schools are underway, we broke ground on Bridgeport and we are expecting to go back by the beginning of the next school year to cut the ribbon on Bridgeport and that will officially take that school off shift. We are also adding some additional classrooms at Exchange Primary, they were de-shifted but they are still in need of some additional classrooms and so the work started there,” she said.
