373 lives lost on the nation’s roadways

The Road Safety Unit (RSU) in the Ministry of Transport is reporting that 373 Jamaicans have died on the nation’s roadways as a result of 339 fatal collisions up to Monday, November 27.

This is a 14 per cent decline in road fatalities when compared to the corresponding period last year.

The parishes of Westmoreland, St Catherine, and St Andrew accounted for the highest number of fatalities to date, while males accounted for 87 per cent of the fatalities.

Motorcyclists continue to accounted for the largest number of road users killed on the nation’s roadways, 32 per cent, followed by private motor vehicle drivers, 19 per cent; pedestrians, 18 per cent; and private motor vehicle passengers, 11 per cent.

The (RSU) is calling for increased caution when traversing the roadways, despite road crashes and fatalities trending down.
