The National Water Commission (NWC) has completed the Waltham Park Road Pipeline Replacement Project, a substantial infrastructure development endeavour, to improve water service delivery and meet the growing demands of the community.

With an investment of $450 million, this project aims to enhance water supply to approximately 20,000 individuals residing in the area.

The project, which took place between August 2022 and February 2023, involved the comprehensive replacement and upgrade of the pipeline along Waltham Park Road, as well as the replacement of aged customer service connections. Spanning from the intersection of Hagley Park Road to Spanish Town Road, this initiative is anticipated to yield several significant benefits for the community.

One of the primary advantages of the project is the assurance of an adequate quantity of running water in all proposed service areas. By addressing the issues of water scarcity and insufficiency, residents can now enjoy improved water distribution with enhanced pressure and flow. Furthermore, the replacement of outdated infrastructure is expected to contribute to increased revenue for the NWC, as well as the regularisation of existing connections.

During a recent tour of the area on June 22, Senator the Hon. Matthew Samuda, Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, emphasised the importance of the project within the broader context of infrastructure development in the region. He explained that the previous water distribution system had reached the end of its useful life and was incapable of accommodating the community’s growth. Minister Samuda highlighted that similar projects would be undertaken in other communities along Spanish Town Road to address these common challenges.

The pipeline replacement project signifies a substantial investment in the distribution network throughout Kingston and St. Andrew. Its primary objectives include improving water supply, reducing non-revenue water and leaks, and connecting customers to the new system. Minister Samuda expressed optimism that these efforts would result in a significant enhancement of water supply for Kingston and St. Andrew within the next 24 months.

Vice President of Operations at the NWC, Kevin Kerr, urged residents who have benefited from the project to register for transfer to the new pipelines. He emphasised the importance of community involvement and encouraged residents to support the NWC’s efforts to implement similar projects across the island.
