It’s Carnival season and, in the words of soca genius Bunji Garlin, “We ready for di road”.
After a two-year hiatus, soca lovers from all over the world will on Sunday (July 10) be able to once again enjoy the world-class experience that is the Jamaica Carnival Road March.
Whether you’re a seasoned reveller or will be making your Road March debut this year, Our Today has curated a list of tips to ensure you’ll have a fun and safe experience on the road.

1. Safeguard your valuables by travelling with the bare necessities
Carnival in Jamaica is meant to be a safe and fun experience for lovers of the soca musical genre. Notwithstanding this, however, over the years Road March has become a pickpocket’s dream, as they prey on individuals caught in the throes of partying and steal their valuables.
2. Prioritise comfort over fashion
Being on the road partying for hours on end is not for the weak of heart. Adequately prepare yourself for the journey ahead by wearing comfortable shoes that are well broken in.

3. Fete responsibly
Alcoholic beverages will abound on the road so be sure to pace yourself. Balance your consumption of alcoholic mixes with water and don’t accept drinks from strangers.
4. Beat the heat
This year’s road march, unlike previous years, will occur in the heart of summer. Protect your skin from a Jamaican sun-induced battering by wearing sunscreen.
5. Stay alert
As you fete with your soca ‘Famalay’, be mindful of your surroundings. Stay close to your group at all times and keep an eye out so no one gets left behind.
