Maxim Rochester, chair of the Sir Henry Morgan Angling Association (SHMAA), emphasized the tournament’s importance for both sportfishing and the local community. “This tournament has become more than just a competition—it’s a tradition that strengthens the bond between the angling community and the beautiful environment of Port Antonio. Our conservation efforts, including the strict catch-and-release policy, reflect our commitment to preserving Jamaica’s marine life for future generations,” Rochester said.
Several competitors expressed their excitement, noting the fun yet competitive atmosphere of the event. One angler remarked, “The competition was tight, and that made it even more thrilling. The weather conditions were ideal, and everyone really pushed themselves—it was the most fun I’ve had on the water in years!”
Bobby Stewart, director of Game Fish Events and participant aboard “Nuh Reely,” shared his thoughts: “Marlin fishing is a blast, especially when the competition is tight. Having a good week fishing with friends reminds you why you fell in love with the sport in the first place. Everyone brings their A-game, and it shows in the results. Team Nuh Reely had a great time with the new boat, and she proved she can raise fish!”
Sterling Asset Management, the title sponsor of the event, continued its decade-long commitment to the tournament. “This is more than just a sponsorship for us,” said Charles Ross, chairman, president & CEO of Sterling Asset Management. “Competing alongside my son Andrew Ross and Dwayne Neil on our boat ‘Mutual Fun’ was a special experience, and we’re proud to support an event that not only fosters camaraderie but also promotes environmental sustainability and strengthens the local community.”
The 61st Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament has once again underscored Jamaica’s reputation as a world-class destination for sportfishing, drawing participants from near and far. With the continued support of title sponsor Sterling Asset Management and other sponsors, the tournament contributes significantly to local tourism, community development, and environmental conservation.
With plans already in motion for next year’s tournament, anglers are eager to return to the Port Antonio waters to test their skills, strengthen friendships, and contribute to the continued success of this beloved event.
