Russell Hammond, a former Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) member of parliament for Westmoreland Central, has died.

Hammond, who had reportedly been ailing for some time, passed away Friday night at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

In a tribute today (December 3), Prime Minister Andrew Holness, leader of the JLP, said: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Jamaica Labour Party Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Central, successful businessman and philanthropist Russell Hammond. Hammond was first elected MP for Westmoreland from 1983 to 1989.”

Holness added: “He played a significant role in laying the foundation for the party’s current success in the Western parishes of Westmoreland and Hanover, being a very active member of the Area Council.

“He was a stalwart and an example of selfless dedication to his country. His memory will live on through his legacy and in the hearts of those who knew him. I extend my sincere condolences to his wife, children, friends and colleagues.”
