China’s NPC holds press conference at Great Hall of the People

Wang Chao, the spokesperson for the first session of the 14th National People’s Congress spoke about China’s legislation on Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law, the Belt and Road Initiative, Africa’s debt, multilateralism against economic decoupling, lawson safeguarding national security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative region and the Asian superpower’s military strength.
The spokesperson took questions from different media houses and provided responses on the agenda of the session.
Wang noted the 13th NPC Standing Committee has made historic achievements in upholding standards and building a sound legal system. The Law on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was an important milestone.
The committee has arranged 35 bills for further deliberation for the first committee hearing.
Wang also noted that China and Europe have common interests and built up cooperation over the years with China considering Europe a comprehensive strategic partner.
Wang dismissed claims that China has positioned Africa into a debt trap citing statistics from the World Bank showing that nearly three-quarters of Africa’s external debt is owed to the multilateral financial institutions and commercial creditors.
He added that the debt deferral amount of China’s contribution is larger than any other G20 member.
Wang then stressed The Belt and Road Initiative is not the cause of Africa’s debt obligations. He also noted that China never attaches any political strings or seeks any selfish political gains.
“On this historical occasion of the 10th anniversary of The Belt and Road Initiative, China stands ready to join hands with all partners to review achievements and plans for new progress,” said Wang Chao.
