Opposition Spokesperson on Industry, Investment and Global Logistics, Anthony Hylton, MP, has proposed that the Government of Jamaica initiates discussions with international partners, including Singapore, to build and operate a successful logistics-centred economy.

Addressing the opening of the 2023/24 Sectoral Debate in Gordon House yesterday, Mr. Hylton said Singapore has successfully done so and has set the standards for education and training by which Jamaica’s efforts to achieve a successful logistics hub can be judged.

The Opposition Spokesperson said by focusing on these areas; Jamaica will enhance its global competitiveness, create new job opportunities, improve its international standing and position itself as the premier global logistics gateway connecting the Americas with the rest of the world. He said Jamaica’s role as the global trade and logistics hub would also necessitate the development of complementary infrastructure.

Mr. Hylton emphasised that Jamaica’s geostrategic location in the centre of the Americas, with an estimated population of 800 million people, provides an unmatched opportunity to host a major logistics and trade hub.

The Opposition Global Logistics Spokesperson warned, however, that in order to achieve this goal, a combination of integrated policies, improvement of physical and digital infrastructure and development of human capital must be targeted and sustained for ten to fifteen years.
