Committal hearing set for UWI student who tortured ex-girlfriend

Matthew Hyde, the University of the West Indies (UWI) student, who allegedly tortured his ex-girlfriend in his dorm room on the Mona campus, will have his committal hearing on May 17.

During the hearing, the court will consider the evidence the prosecution intends to use, and decide if there is enough evidence to take the matter to a trial.

The hearing date was set when Hyde appeared before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish court yesterday (May 3).

The 20-year-old is accused of detaining his ex-girlfriend in his dorm room for three days, during which he reportedly beat and burnt her with a clothing iron.

He is charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, malicious communication and false imprisonment. Hyde is also remanded in custody.
