The Jamaican Women of Florida (JWOF) hosted Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, in which she was presented the key to the City of Miramar in Florida on Sunday (May 7).
Mayor of Miramar, Wayne Messam, presented the key to Smith.
“We could have presented this yesterday but everyone was wanting their jerked chicken and the music was pounding so we thought that it wasn’t the proper attention to really bestow this recognition on our honoured guest. You don’t necessarily have a Minister always here in the community and Miramar being one of the largest populated communities of Jamaicans in our city, we wanted to make sure that it was properly given,” said Messam.
He was referring to the Jamaica Hi-5 5K Run/Walk in which J$5 million (US$35,000) was raised in Miramar, Florida on Saturday (May 6). The funds raised will seek to benefit Riversdale Health Centre in St Catherine and four other health facilities.
“When you look at your career and your life, it is not only inspiring but it is an example for all of us, men and women to follow. We’re very proud of your accomplishments, the work that you’re doing to continue to build Jamaica, to expand trade through the region and Miramar is one of the willing participants who helped further the bilateral trade between Jamaica and the US and we just thank you for coming to South Florida,” he said.
“I remember your first visit to the city of Miramar. It was an honour to have you come. Now that you’re back, we want to let you know that we want to let you know that we want you to continue to come but to be able come, you don’t need our permission because you have the key to the city,” he continued.
The mayor also said that “on behalf of the nearly 150,000 residents of Miramar of which Jamaicans make up a significant component, we thank you for your leadership, we thank you for your contributions and whatever we can do in the diaspora to help further brand Jamaica and just overall benefit of Jamaica, we are here to support”.
