The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to wallop the region, Caribbean countries are increasingly coming under strain to keep the worst impacts of the pandemic at bay.
In the last four days, the Caribbean recorded slightly more new infections (11,021) than closed cases (10,739).
Looking at the bigger picture, the region heads toward a commendable 24th-straight week of majority closed cases, even amid a worrying spike.
With just 10 days to the one-year anniversary since the pandemic first infiltrated Caribbean shores, analysis of regional data by Our Today has noted 19 of the 32 affected countries and territories reported new cases within the last 24 hours.
As at 7:49 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) on Sunday, February 21, collated data from respective health departments across the region have indicated a combined total of 521,109 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Of that number, some 335,777 cases, or roughly 64.4 per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are currently 185,332 active cases regionally.
The statistics were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (327,735 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico and Martinique).
In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications has steadily climbed to 8,042.
At the time of publication, Anguilla joins Grenada as the two territories without active cases in the Caribbean.
