Mere hours away from marking the one-year anniversary since the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) first infiltrated the Caribbean, countries across the region continue to ward off the third wave’s most deadly impacts.

In the last four days, the Caribbean recorded slightly more new infections (10,893) than closed cases (10,551)—with the spike seemingly cooling.  The region heads toward a noteworthy 26 weeks of keeping majority closed cases.

Analysis of regional data by Our Today has identified 20 of the 32 affected countries and territories reported new cases within the last 24 hours.

As at 2:42 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) on Tuesday, March 2, collated data from respective health departments across the region have indicated a combined total of 540,256 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, some 355,625 cases, or roughly 65.8 per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are currently 184,631 active cases regionally.

The statistics were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (346,412 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico and Martinique).

In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications has steadily climbed to 8,293.

At the time of publication, the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla and Grenada were the Caribbean’s only territories without active cases.
