Embattled UK broadcaster Piers Morgan resigned from morning programme Good Morning Britain on Tuesday (March 9) with immediate effect.
The resignation came hours after Morgan stormed off the show claiming he had ‘had enough’ of co-star Alex Beresford calling him out for disparaging comments against Meghan Markle.
The television host stepped down just as Ofcom launched an investigation into the show, following his comments about ‘not believing Meghan’ when the Duchess of Sussex claimed she was suicidal during Sunday’s widely viewed Oprah Winfrey interview.
Ofcom, Britain’s media regulator, launched a probe into Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain after receiving complaints about comments made by Morgan in the wake of the former royals’ interview.
Morgan went as far as to mock those so offended, claiming that he wouldn’t have been fired for his opinions on Markle, who he referred to as the ‘Pinocchio Princess’.
“Lots of people on here want me fired for expressing my opinion on the Pinocchio Princess. If you want to join them, there are various petitions still doing the rounds from the last few times you’ve all tried, and failed, to have me fired for saying what I think,” he said on Twitter, after Monday’s GMB show.
Morgan’s criticism of Meghan had become more vociferous amid the interview—sparking widespread condemnation and a petition that amassed over 41,000 signatures.
“We have launched an investigation into Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain under our harm and offence rules,” regulator Ofcom said in a statement.
However, hours later, the regulator returned to announce that Morgan had decided to part ways with ITV, which the company accepted.
In a statement, ITV said: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”
