Caribbean countries are losing ground in the fight against the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic this week, as new infections and deaths are trending upwards.
Hanging in the balance, however, are the regional closed cases—managing to stay above the coronavirus wave for 29 weeks running—which is now at risk of being overtaken.
Over the weekend, Anguilla has dropped off the ‘coronavirus-free’ grouping as the Caribbean is left with just three territories without active cases.
In the last four days, however, the Caribbean recorded slightly more new infections (9,484) than closed cases (7,198).
Analysis of regional data by Our Today has indicated that 25 of the 32 affected countries and territories reported new cases within the last 24 hours.
As at 5:57 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) on Monday, March 15, collated data from respective health departments across the region has indicated a combined total of 571,492 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Of that number, some 382,127 cases, or roughly 66.9 per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are currently 189,365 active cases regionally.
The statistics were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (373,470 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico, French Guiana, Guadeloupe and Martinique).
In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications has steadily climbed to 8,657.
