A crisis is potentially brewing in The Bahamas, as the northern Caribbean country’s coronavirus (COVID-19) caseload officially surged past 10,000 on Sunday (April 25).

According to the Ministry of Health, which released its Friday update, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas confirmed 74 new cases, bringing the national tally to 10,050.

It is the second-highest total in recent weeks and marks a continued trend of growing COVID-19 cases across the Bahamas, with New Providence and Grand Bahama islands accounting for the largest chunk of infections.

The country is managing 519 active cases at this time, while 9,262 Bahamians have made a full recovery from the coronavirus, the ministry added.

Bahamas’ death toll, which stands at 196, could be increased in the coming days as some 29 COVID-related fatalities under investigation.

The health ministry added that 51 patients are being treated at four hospitals in New Providence and Grand Bahama.

Of that number, 47 were classified as moderately ill; four are critically ill and continue treatment in the Doctor’s Hospital intensive care unit (ICU).
