VCB places second in 100m at USATF Open in Texas

Two-time Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown was second in the 100m at the 2021 USATF Open on Tuesday (May 18) as she continued her quest to book a spot on Jamaica’s team to the Olympics this summer.

At the meet held at the Athletic Performance Ranch in Fort Worth, Texas, Campbell-Brown who celebrated her 39th birthday on May 15, clocked 11.55 in the race won by the USA’s Mikiah Brisco in 11.42. Caitland Smith of the USA was third in 11.60.

The much-acclaimed sprinter was among several Caribbean athletes who had mixed fortunes at the meet. The most successful of them was Puerto Rico’s Jasmine’s Camacho-Quinn and Tyna Gaither of the Bahamas, who won the 100m hurdles and 200m, respectively.

Camacho-Quinn who has the world-leading time of 12.32 in the sprint hurdles ran a relatively slow 12.84s for victory over the USA pair of Christina Clemons, who ran 12.92 for second place and Queen Claye (nee Harrison), who crossed the finish line in 13.21.

Jamaica’s Rushelle Burton continued her long journey back from injury with an eighth-place finish. Her time was 13.93.

Gaither narrowly won the 200m in 23.11 holding off Candice Hill of the United States, who ran 23.17 for the runner-up spot. Morolake Akinosun was third in 23.26.

Gianna Woodruff of Panama won the 400m hurdles in 55.37. Nnenya Hailey of the USA finished second in 56.05. Melissa Gonzales of Colombia was third in 56.18.

Meanwhile, Tia-Adanna Belle of Barbados ran a season-best 56.28 for fourth. She finished ahead of Yanique Haye-Smith of the Turks and Caicos Islands, who clocked a season-best 56.89 for fifth and Trinidad and Tobago’s Sparkle McKnight, who was sixth in 57.73.

Jamaica’s Chrisann Gordon Powell was third in the 400m in 51.42. The race was won by USA icon Allyson Felix, who clocked 50.88 for the victory. Jessica Beard ran 51.31 for second place.

In the 110m hurdles final, Trinidad and Tobago’s Ruebin Walters ran 13.73 for second place behind the USA’s Aaron Mallet, who clocked 13.64 for the win. Wellington Zaza of Liberia finished third in 13.77.

Jeff Julmis of Haiti ran a season-best 13.80 for fifth place while the oft-injured Andre Riley of Jamaica was eighth in 13.87.

Also eighth was Javon Francis, who ran a season-best 46.74 in the 400m won by Michael Cherry in his season-best of 44.37. Valente Mendoza of Mexico was second in 46.17 while Aldrich Bailey of the USA was third in 46.18.

Nigeria’s Ese Brume won the women’s long jump with a leap of 6.45m, Barbados’ Akela Jones was fourth with 6.29m.  Christabel Nettey of Canada was second with 6.37m. Tiffany Flynn of the USA was third with her jump of 6.29m.

Jamaica’s Chanice Porter was way off her best, with a 6.21m performance only good enough for seventh.
