While the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China officially get under way with the Opening Ceremony, tomorrow, the ceremony to kick off the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing are remembered for its spectacle and grandeur.

Here, a quantum leap was made, a panoply of colours, precise coordination, historical storytelling, dynamism, music, culture all coming together to captivate the world  – it was brilliant and set a new standard. Around 1.5 billion people watched the spell-binding event.

Beijing is the only city to host both the summer and winter Olympic Games.
