California native, Giveon turns 27 years old today. The American singer’s rise to prominence came after being featured on Drake’s 2020 single Chicago Freestyle.
Giveon, whose full name is Giveon Dezmann Evans, self-released his debut single, Garden Kisses in 2018, and since then has gone on to create multiple EPs. Let us take a look at a few of the songs deserving of spot on your playlist by this distinct and memorising baritone voice.
8. Stuck On You
Released in September 2020, Stuck On You serves as the 12th track from the singer’s EP, When It’s All Said And Done…Take Time. In this song, Giveon is experiencing difficulties letting go of his former partner.
The single was produced by Sevn Thomas, Jahaan Sweet, Boi-1da, Rodrigo Barahona and Giveon.
7. Favorite Mistake
The fourth track from the artiste’s Take Time EP, Favorite Mistake explores the emotions of knowingly stepping out on your partner.
Giveon, the unfaithful partner, is aware that his actions are wrong and could hurt his significant other, however he feels this is too great an opportunity to pass up given the connection he feels . Both know it may not end well, but are set on living in the moment.
6. All To Me
This is another Giveon track that tackles the subject of unfaithfulness. In All To Me, the singer’s ex is out cheating on her new boyfriend with – can you guess? Giveon! On the track, the American tries to convince his former girlfriend that he is right for her and knows her better (physically and mentally) than her current boyfriend.
All To Me was released in 2021 on Giveon’s When It’s All Said and Done…Take Time EP.
5. Chicago Freestyle
Although only featured on this track, it was this Drake record that gave him what he needed to hit the mainstream. Released in 2020, in Chicago Freestyle, Drake dedicates his lyrics to the lessons he learned on his come-up and reflects on the various mistakes he made in past relationships.
Chicago Freestyle served as the third track on the Dark Lane Demo Tapes.
4. The Beach
The lead track on the Take Time EP, The Beach is an ode to the singer’s hometown, the east side of Long Beach, California. In an interview the Giveon explained how living in Long Beach helped shape him into the musician he is today.
“It was fun, dangerous, and interesting all at the same time. My mom did a good job of making sure my brothers and I didn’t become a product of our environment, but she also gave us room to experience what it means to be from Long Beach,” he shared.
He continued: “Becoming an artiste came naturally for me. The quick version of how I became an artiste. …my mom noticed that I can stay in key, she forced me to sing at birthday parties, fast forward to high school and I did a music education programme at the Grammy Museum, there I discovered who Frank Sinatra was and how I found my voice.”
Both Sinatra and Giveon have unique baritone voices.
3. Like I Want You
Like I Want You was penned from the view of personal friend, rather than from a personal place. In the 2019 song, Giveon pours out his heart, reminiscing on what was, whilst hoping that his love interest will somehow come back to him.
Afraid that his love interest has moved on, the singer tries to hide his true feelings, failing in his initial attempt. Like I Want You is the seventh track from Giveon’s Take Time EP.
2. Peaches
This #1 Billboard hit serves as the 12th track from Justin Bieber’s Justice album and it features Giveon as well as Daniel Caesar.
Peaches is an ode to different areas in the United Sates. The song originated as Bieber created a melody at the home of American record producer, Andrew Wattt.
1. Heartbreak Anniversary
His most commercially successful song to date, Heartbreak Anniversary was released in 2020 on this very day.
Heartbreak Anniversary, the second single from Take Time, centres on the anniversary of a separation. Written from the perspective of a close friend, the single was released as part of his Take Time EP.
