A paradigm shift in local boxing is set to begin on Saturday (July 1) when the Wray & Nephew Fights Series punches off at the Cling Cling Oval in Olympic Gardens.

Fans will be able to watch a total of eight fights on the night, seven of which will be amateur while the feature bout will feature professional heavyweight fighter Jermaine “Breezy” Richards.

Richards is delighted with the opportunity provided by the series to display his talent and is looking to entertain the fans on opening night.

“Breezy” Richards who hails from Kingston has a professional record of 2-0 and is intent on making it 3-0 on Saturday.

Richards revealed that he got into the fight game because of the love of the sport of his grandfather.

“My grandfather loved to watch boxing. He would record every boxing match and that is how I fell in love with boxing.”

Managed by I Fight Promotions, the tall, powerfully built fighter stated that he was excited to be a part of the event at the launch of the event recently and says he wants to “show his worth”.

“Boxing is my life. If I don’t box, I don’t have a life. It has changed me both physically and mentally. My ultimate dream is to become the number one heavyweight boxer in Jamaica and be global at it.”

Richards who is now 34 years old has been boxing since he was 25 years old.

“Boxing showed me that I can be way more than I am at the moment, so I am following my dream.”

The most important character trait that he has developed out of boxing is patience, Richards revealed.

The father of three says the sport has helped to keep him grounded.

“I have to keep positive, stay focused and achieve all my dreams so that my kids can have the life I didn’t,” he said.

Fans can expect a good boxing display on Saturday night when the “Breeze” seeks his third professional win in the first heavyweight contest of the Wray & Nephew Fight Nights series.
