The chairman of the Jamaica Police Federation, Corporal Rohan James, has been interdicted and removed from duty as a result of disciplinary action taken against him by the commissioner of police.
Reports reaching Our Today is that Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson ordered the interdiction of James based on remarks he made at the funeral of Constable Damien Blair at the Old Harbour New Testament Church of God in St Catherine on July 15. During the service for the fallen lawman, James reportedly made terse comments on the outstanding issue of overtime pay for members of the police force.
In his address, the federation head reportedly said: “I am not going to negotiate with High Command. Let the record be made clear that the battle lines have been drawn. Speak to the court!”
Continuing, James said: “I also want to say to High Command and to our commissioner, ‘God helps you if the membership is not paid their overtime come this month end’.”
Sources confirmed with Our Today that the police federation head was served with the interdiction notice yesterday and was ordered to hand over his identification and other properties, as well as cease from performing duties with immediate effect. He will receive only three-quarters of his pay pending the outcome of proceedings at a court of enquiry into his actions that have been deemed inappropriate and a violation of the police service regulations.
James is also required to remain on the island and can only travel upon requesting permission from the Governor General, after notifying the head of the Kingston Western Police Division two months prior to the intended departure date. He is also to provide his address of abode and contact number to the head of the Kingston Western Police Division.
The move by the police commissioner to interdict the head of the police union is reportedly not going down well with rank and file members of the police force.
