Today is the 55th birthday of French-Canadian music veteran, Celine Dion. Dion, who has songs in both French and English, is known for her powerful and technically perfect vocals.
She is the best-selling Canadian artiste and the best-selling French language artiste of all time.
As we celebrate another year of life for the icon, let us take a look at eight of her songs to add to your playlist.
8. Where Does My Heart Beat Now
The third track from her Unison album, Where Does My Heart Beat Now helped to propel the French-Canadian to superstardom.
The track was produced by Christopher Neil and written by two Nashville-based writer/musicians, Taylor Rhodes and Robert White Johnson.
7. Goodbye’s (The saddest word)
Goodbye’s (The Saddest Word) serves as the seventh track on the singer’s sixth English language album, A New Day Has Come. The 2002 track was produced by Robert John Lange.
6. Because You Loved Me
This 1993 track, written by Diane Warren and David Foster, was composed for the 1996 film, Up Close & Personal. The record for the movie soundtrack won a Grammy award and was nominated for an Academy and Golden Globe award.
A part of the singer’s Falling Into You album, Because You Loved Me was the lead single in both North America and Japan, and was released in other parts of the world as the second single.
5. If You Asked Me To
The fourth track on the singer’s eponymous album, If You Asked Me To was originally sung by American singer Patti Labelle. Labelle recorded the track in 1989 and in 1992, it was rerecorded by Dion.
The track was written by Diane Warren and talks about a woman who discovers how to love once again after years of avoiding it, noting that one person in particular is able to get her to that state.
4. The Power Of Love
The first track on the singer’s The Colour Of My Love album, The Power of Love was produced by David Foster. The track was originally recorded by Jennifer Rush in 1984 and Dion, just nine years later, recorded her version.
Rush wrote the track about her boyfriend, Steven Engebretson.
3. I’m Alive
Produced by Ric Wake, Richie Jones and Kristian Lundin, I’m Alive is the first track from her A New Day Has Come album.
Released as the second single, I’m Alive was featured in the 2002 movie, Stuart Little 2.
2. That’s The Way It Is
That’s The Way It Is was released on Celine Dion’s 1999 album, All The Way…A Decade of Song. The 10th track and lead single from the album, That’s The Way It Is speaks about perseverance and diverts from her usual slow-paced songs.
Swedish songwriters Andreas Carlsson, Kristian Lundin and Max Martin penned the piece.
1. My Heart Will Go On
Written for the classic movie, Titanic, My Heart Will Go On is one the singer’s most successful and popular songs to date.
Late American composer James Horner created the record and opted for the French-Canadian to sing the ballad. Dion, who was approached about the subject by husband René Angélil, was at first very upset and reluctantly agreed to sing it.
When she recorded the demo, Horner told her about the movie and the significance of the song, but Dion just wanted to get it over with. She perfected the demo in one take, which ended up being the version used in the film.
