The ATP 500 tournament in Vienna saw quarterfinal action on Friday (October 21).

The first match-up of the day was between Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev. The first set was a 6-1 rout in favour of the third-seeded Russian.

Zverev would find his way and the second set was far more evenly contested. Neither player dropped his serve and the ensuing tiebreak was won by Zverev to force a deciding set.

Rublev stamped his class and eventually went on to win the contest 6-1, 7-6, 6-3.

Stefanos Tsitsipas prevailed in straight sets against Serbian Borna Gojo.

The match was pretty evenly contested, with Tsitsipas taking advantage of the slivers of opportunities given to him by the Serb. The two had similar percentages throughout the contest, the main difference being decided by the Greek taking one more break of serve than Gojo. The match ended 7-6,7-5.

It was an all-Russian affair for the next match, with defending champion Daniil Medvedev taking on Karen Khachanov. This was another fairly even contest with both players having similar numbers throughout the match.

Medvedev would take the first set before Khachanov would force a decider. All three sets were determined by a single break of serve and ended 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

The final matchup of the day saw American Frances Tiafoe go down to Italian Jannik Sinner.

It was a fairly routine match for the Beijing Open champion was the more composed of the two players and won two break points to Tiafoe’s zero. The Italian moved on in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

All four winners are scheduled to play in the Rolex Paris Masters, the final ATP 1000 tournament before the ATP finals in Turin.

Medvedev, Rublev, and Sinner have already qualified for the year-end event.

Tsitsipas and defeated quarterfinalist Zverev, are both looking to earn their places in the event.

With this victory, defending champion Daniil Medvedev is on track to continue his title defense. He will face Tsitsipas in the semi-finals, who he leads 8-4, in their career head-to-head.

Jannik Sinner will take his 3-2 record against Andrey Rublev into their semi-final matchup.
