Jamaican tech-entrepreneur Aldain Reid has recently been honoured as one of the winners of the Commonwealth Secretary-General’s 2023 Innovation for Sustainable Development Awards.

Held in Nairobi, Kenya, in the presence of President William Ruto and Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, the award ceremony celebrated Reid’s First Alert travel safety app, distinguishing it among outstanding innovations from Commonwealth nations.

First Alert, recognised for revolutionising travel safety, is an acclaimed emergency response service that connects travellers across the globe with 24-hour assistance. Its recent global launch underscores its pivotal role in enhancing travel safety, offering real-time aid in various emergency scenarios.

The award ceremony highlighted the contributions of 15 exceptional innovators drawn from Commonwealth nations across five categories and represent the pillars of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership.

Each winner, including Aldain Reid for First Alert, received a trophy, a certificate, and a £3,000 cash prize, acknowledging their significant impact in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Reid, in expressing gratitude, said: “This recognition from the Commonwealth is a testament to our commitment to safety and sustainable development. It’s an honour to be among such distinguished innovators, and this award fuels our passion to continue our work in making travel safe and reliable for everyone.”
