The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has reported that successful operations have led to the seizure of 65 firearms since the start of the year.
In a post on its social media, the JCF said that the numbers reflect an increase in the seizure of illegal firearms, with 35 more guns seized compared to the similar period last year.
“More than just seizures, we’re building a safer Jamaica. The JCF is dedicated to a comprehensive approach to tackling gun violence. From proactive community engagement to swift action against illegal firearms, we’re working tirelessly to make our streets safer,” the JCF wrote.
The latest report of an illegal firearm seizure took place in Old Harbour, St Catherine, on Sunday, January 21. Four men and a woman were arrested in relation to the seizure.
Reports are that the police, acting on information, intercepted a motor car along the Old Harbour main road. When the officers approached the vehicle, one man fled the scene. The remaining five were apprehended and searched, including the vehicle.
According to the police, they found one Taurus 9mm pistol with a magazine containing 15 rounds, one Taurus Millennium 9mm pistol with a magazine containing 11 rounds, and one 9mm pistol with a
magazine containing eight rounds of ammunition.
The JCF has issued multiple pleas for persons with information that can lead to the seizure of illegal guns and the arrest of gunmen and gangsters to call Crime Stop at 311, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) tip line at 811, 119, or the nearest police station.
