In response to the evolving international landscape, China advocates for a reformation of the global governance system to better reflect the dynamic power shifts worldwide.

At the heart of China’s proposition is the vision of an equal and orderly multipolar world alongside universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalisation. According to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, “Multipolarity and economic globalisation are the prevailing trends…but there are different views on how they should look.”

China envisions a world where rights, opportunities, and rules are equitable for all nations, regardless of their size or strength, challenging the notion that international affairs should be the dominion of a select few powers.

This was the clear message from the recently held Two Sessions at the Great Hall of the People.

China’s solution emphasises respect for the principles of the UN Charter and the basic norms governing international relations, promoting an orderly multipolar world that eschews fragmentation and disarray. On economic globalisation, Wang Yi outlines a vision for inclusive growth and shared benefits, advocating for national and international development imbalances to be addressed in pursuit of common prosperity. This stance represents a departure from unilateralism and protectionism, aiming to stabilise global industrial and supply chains and ensure a robust world economy.

China’s role in resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict

Addressing the longstanding Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Wang Yi highlighted the humanitarian disaster it represents and called for immediate international action to promote a ceasefire and provide humanitarian assistance. 

“The failure to end this humanitarian disaster today…is a tragedy for humanity and a disgrace for civilisation,” he stated. China supports the implementation of the two-state solution, viewing it as the path to enduring peace in the Middle East. China’s commitment includes supporting Palestine’s full UN membership and advocating for an international peace conference to establish a roadmap for peace.

Mediation successes: Saudi Arabia-Iran 

Wang Yi also reflected on China’s role in mediating the resumption of diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran, the de-escalation in northern Myanmar, and the improvement of Iran-Pakistan relations. These diplomatic efforts have been lauded for their effectiveness and impartiality, demonstrating China’s unique capability in international mediation. Wang Yi attributed this success to China’s commitments to non-interference, political settlement, objectivity and impartiality, and addressing both symptoms and root causes of conflicts.

“China forms its stands based on the merit of each issue…credibility comes before influence,” he explained.

China seeks to play a constructive role in shaping a more just and peaceful world.
