The PNP Patriots says it firmly supports the statements made by Leader of the Opposition Mark Golding regarding House Speaker Juliet Holness’ conduct since her appointment.
“Her actions have lacked transparency and highlight the obvious conflict of interest that exists currently. The PNP Patriots commend Mr Golding’s commitment to transparency and accountability in raising this vital issue within the parliamentary framework,” the PNP-affiliate said in a statement.
“It is particularly troubling that House Speaker Holness has failed to disclose the advice provided by the Attorney General regarding the tabling of crucial reports from the Integrity Commission. This lack of transparency not only undermines the democratic process but also raises serious questions about the Speaker’s commitment to upholding the principles of good governance,” PNP Patriots continued.
“Furthermore, the walk-out staged by the governing party in response to Mr Golding’s statements speaks volumes about their apparent guilt and unwillingness to address legitimate corruption concerns raised by the opposition. The governing party’s failure to uphold good governance and transparency is a disservice to the Jamaican people and undermines the trust placed in elected representatives. This action only serves further to erode public trust in the integrity of parliamentary proceedings.”
It contended that there is inherent conflict of interest stemming from Juliet Holness’s relationship with Prime Minister Andrew Holness, which raises serious concerns about her ability to fulfil the duties of House Speaker impartially.
The PNP Patriots the current situation with the performance of former House Speaker Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert, who was criticised for not being impartial in carrying out her duties. Unfortunately, there is no improvement in the current situation as House Speaker Juliet Holness has failed to act independently and without any bias. This has only worsened the already declining performance of the Speaker’s office.
The PNP Patriots reiterate that the impartiality of the House Speaker is paramount to upholding the integrity of Jamaica’s parliamentary process. “It is imperative that every member of parliament, regardless of political affiliation, can trust in the Speaker’s ability to preside over proceedings with fairness and neutrality.”
The PNP Patriots is call upon the governing party to prioritise the preservation of democratic values and principles by ensuring that the House Speaker remains independent and free from partisan influence.
“Jamaica’s democracy thrives on the strength of its institutions, and it is incumbent upon all elected officials to uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability,” it stated.
