While most of the island’s electricity has been restored following the impact of Hurricane Beryl, many areas remain without electricity.

This has caused some folks to resort to using candles in the interim. However, using candles as a source of lighting can be dangerous if not used carefully.

Here are some important tips on how to use candles safely:

Place on a stable surface

Always place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from flammable objects such as curtains, bedding, and papers.

Also, candles that burn unevenly can be cut or melted to stand straight.

Put it out

Never leave a burning candle unattended, and extinguish all candles when you leave a room or before going to sleep.

Most candle-fire-related deaths are caused by a candle being left unattended. Setting a reminder or alarm on your phone may give extra assurance and help you make sure you put out the candle in time.

Trim the wick

Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before each use. A long wick can cause uneven burning, dripping, or flaring.

To avoid flares, keep the wax pool free of debris, such as matches and wick trimmings. This seemingly insignificant step could assist in

Properly space

When burning multiple candles, ensure they are spaced at least 10 centimetres apart.

This prevents them from creating a large, combined flame, which can be quite dangerous.

Keep kids & pets away

Children and pets should always be kept away from lit candles. They can easily knock them over or come into contact with the flame, leading to bodily harm or house fires.

Get a candle holder

Use candle holders that are sturdy and won’t tip over easily.

In addition, choose holders that fit the candle size to prevent tipping or wax overflow. For added safety, consider using candle shades or hurricane lamps to protect the flame from drafts and reduce the risk of fire.

Be careful how you extinguish

When extinguishing candles, use a snuffer or a gentle blow to avoid hot wax splattering.

Do not use water to put out a candle, as it can cause the hot wax to splatter and the glass container to break.

By following these simple yet potentially life-saving safety measures, you can enjoy the benefits of candlelight without the risk of fire.
