Principal of St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) Keith Wellington told Our Today that he brought new coach Neil Harrison to the school, not just for a good showing at the prestigious Champs, but a holistic development of the students.

Harrison, one of the top athletics schoolboy coaches in Jamaica, also coached national teams to the various youth championships.

“Coach Harrison brings significant experience and maturity as a Physical Education teacher, coach and mentor,” Wellington confirmed.

“He is expected to provide guidance, mentorship and technical leadership to our overall sports programmes,” he noted.

Harrison who led Jamaica College to the Champs title in 2021 saw his contract not renewed earlier this year which allowed Wellington to bring home Harrison, who is a native of St Elizabeth.

“It is also expected that coach Harrison’s addition to the STETHS team will lead to more of our student-athletes optimising their talents across or various school programmes,” Wellington added.

But in 2023, the Harrison-led JC were up in arms against the Wellington-led InterSecondary Schools Association (ISSA) over the disqualification of JC’s powerful 4×800 relay team at Penn Relays for using Nicholas Power who was ineligible, having just transferred from Calabar High.

But that’s water under the bridge and Harrison will bring to the STETHS’ programme a wealth of experience having also coached at Kingston College and Munro College.

He has the distinction of winning both football and athletics titles with two different schools.

In 1991 he led Clarendon College to the DaCosta Cup crown and then led JC to the athletics championship in 2021. He also coached St George’s College in the Manning Cup.

In 2014 when KC sacked coach Lenny Hyde during the season, Harrison was installed as interim coach of the Manning Cup team and led KC into the second round.
