It can be stressful coping with a diagnosis of breast cancer and patients may react differently to news of their diagnosis.

Some may withdraw from family and friends because of the changes they are experiencing, while others may just simply be in denial.

Whatever the response, it is very important for these individuals to have a strong support system to help them devise the best coping strategy to aid in a successful treatment and recovery process.

In commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Our Today has researched some coping strategies that you or someone you know living with breast cancer can employ.

Acknowledge your emotions

Feeling fear, anxiety, and other emotions following your diagnosis is very common. Take the time you need to acknowledge these emotions that you may be feeling.

Acknowledging how you feel, will allow you to better understand how to cope with these emotions and move forward.

Seek support

Having someone to talk to about the emotions that you are feeling can help you feel supported and boost your confidence.

Similarly, if you know someone who is diagnosed with breast cancer, think about how they may need support. Likewise, what you can do to make their experience better—this may just be a listening ear or some kind words.

Get information about treatment options

Do your research about breast cancer to educate yourself on the risk factors, symptoms and treatment options. It is also helpful to join a breast cancer support group to learn the coping mechanisms that other breast cancer survivors use and possibly employ them.

It is equally important to seek professional advice from your medical provider about the best treatment option for you.

Additional Strategies

  • Practice Mindfulness: Techniques like meditation and deep breathing can help manage anxiety and promote emotional well-being.
  • Maintain a Routine: Keeping a regular schedule can provide a sense of normalcy amid uncertainty.
  • Engage in Activities: Find joy in hobbies or activities you love, which can be a great distraction and boost your mood.
