Member of Parliament for St Thomas Eastern, Dr Michelle Charles, has announced that the procurement process is now underway to engage firms for the transformation of the old courthouse in Morant Bay into a national museum.
Charles provided this update in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, December 10, during her contribution to the state of constituencies debate.
“Madam Speaker, in my second presentation to this House in 2022, we had the audacity to ask the government to consider transforming the old courthouse in Morant Bay into a national museum, which would preserve the history of St Thomas. I am happy to report that the procurement process to engage the services of a consulting firm to design the museum is underway. The tendering process, which was international, solicited bidders from Jamaica and overseas. The tender process closed on 11 November 2024,” Charles noted.

She stated that a technical committee formed to evaluate the bids is expected to complete the evaluation process by 12 December 2024.
“If an eligible and qualified bidder is identified from this process, we will proceed with contract signing and the commencement of the design phase, which is expected to take 24 weeks. It is anticipated that the design component will be completed by the end of the first quarter of the next financial year. Once the design is completed and approved, the project will advance to the second phase, which involves procuring construction and construction management services,” Charles explained.
