The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) formally arrested two suspected gun runners on Wednesday (February 19) in connection to a major firearm and ammunition seizure in the St Andrew South police division last month.

While noting that investigations continue, the JCF advised that the arrests stem from a multi-agency operation on Monday, February 17, at Port Bustamante.

Law enforcement say they intercepted a shipping container originating from the United States, which later revealed a massive cache of 66 firearms—including 16 high-powered firearms and over 4,700 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

The JCF’s Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID), operating under the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch (CTOC), spearheaded investigations into the illicit shipment.

Partnering with with the Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA), police assured that efforts to disrupt firearm trafficking networks and bolster national security will continue.

“This latest seizure marks a significant milestone in the ongoing crackdown on illegal arms smuggling,” the statement read.

NB: A previous version of this article erroneously stated that the operation was first conducted on January 17.
