The prime suspect in the murder of a young girl in St Thomas was fatally shot during a reported altercation with the police on Wednesday.

Authorities have identified the deceased as 14-year-old Tianna Sutherland, an American citizen in Jamaica on vacation.

The Morant Bay Criminal Investigation Branch reported that on Tuesday, July 2, Sutherland was at home when a male intruder entered the premises via an open gate.

Tianna and the intruder became involved in a physical struggle during which she was stabbed multiple times. She, however, managed to injure her assailant and telephoned her father, who arrived to find her in the kitchen with multiple stab wounds.

She was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The police subsequently followed a trail of blood to a nearby concrete building where Tianna’s attacker, who is said to be of unsound mind, was located.

The naked man reportedly attacked the police team with a machete and was shot. Personal items belonging to Tianna, including her phone and jewellery, were found during a search of the building.
