Margaret Campbell, newly appointed CEO of GraceKennedy Money Services, will assume her new role on April 1, 2025.

The Jamaica Money Remitters Association (JMRA) has issued a statement of assurance to Jamaicans at home and abroad following the recent signing of a new law by the USA Government, which includes a 1% tax on in-store cash remittances.

The excise tax, which applies to remittances sent using cash, money orders, or cashier’s cheques, goes into effect December 31, 2025. While it presents a potential shift in how many Jamaican families receive support from abroad, the JMRA remains confident in the collective ability to adapt and thrive.

“Jamaicans are no strangers to change, and we will meet this moment as we always have with unity, creativity, and strength,” said Margaret Campbell, President of the JMRA and CEO of GraceKennedy Money Services.

“This is not a time for fear. It’s a time to stay informed and take advantage of the options available to us.”

Adapting with Confidence

The JMRA is encouraging Jamaicans and diaspora communities to explore and adopt digital remittance options, many of which are not impacted by the new tax. Transfers sent using U.S. bank accounts, debit or credit cards, or approved digital channels remain exempt.

“Digital remittance services are safe, secure, and in many cases more affordable,” Campbell noted.

“We’re urging families to speak with their remittance providers and learn more about how they can use these modern channels or non-cash payment options to continue receiving support without added costs.”

To support this shift, the JMRA and its members will be increasing public education efforts to help Jamaicans better understand how to access and use digital platforms confidently and safely.

The JMRA acknowledges the important role remittances play in daily life from paying bills and school fees to caring for elderly relatives and assures the public that all efforts are being made to ensure continued access to reliable, cost-effective services.

“Our diaspora continues to show unwavering love and commitment to their families and here at home, we will continue to provide the guidance and tools needed to receive that support in ways that are simple and secure,” said Campbell.
