Teenage Canadian wildcard Victoria Mboko claimed her first WTA title by defeating four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the Canadian Open final on Friday (August 8).
After dropping the first set, Mboko dug deep just as she had in her previous match to rally past Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in front of a home crowd of 11,000.
The victory caps off an incredible rise for Mboko, who started the year ranked 333rd in the world but has now soared to No. 24. Along the way, she took down four Grand Slam champions, proving her breakthrough was no fluke. Known for her slow starts on home soil, Mboko once again had to fight from behind, something she’s done three times in the past two weeks.
The opening set was all Osaka, as Mboko struggled with rhythm, committing 22 unforced errors in just 38 minutes. But the second set turned into a chaotic battle, featuring seven breaks of serve.
Mboko seized control with a crucial break to go up 5-2, only to falter while serving for the set, handing Osaka a lifeline with three double faults. Still, she held her nerve to force a decider.

The final set saw Mboko break Osaka immediately, and though the Japanese star struck back, the young Canadian found another gear, reeling off the last five games to seal a historic victory. Next up is the US Open, starting August 24.
