PNP MP Candidate for South East St Ann, Dr Kenneth Russell, has expressed “profound sadness” at the horrific incident in Moneague where two innocent children were brutally murdered.

“The murder of two innocent children is a dark day for our community and our country. As a community, we are weeping, we are numb, the only thing that is clear is that this makes no sense. No words can adequately capture the devastation felt by the family, friends, neighbours, and all who have been touched by the lives of these children.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the loved ones left to mourn this unbearable loss. We must surround them with support, comfort, and compassion during this time of unimaginable sorrow,” Russell continued.

Russell noted that this tragedy highlights the urgent need to address the mental health crisis, domestic violence and family-related issues that continue to plague society.

“Too often, unresolved conflicts, untreated trauma, and the absence of adequate support systems result in tragic outcomes that tear families apart and leave communities broken”.

The police are treating the father of the children as a suspect and have taken him into custody.

Opposition Leader Mark Golding also expressed condolences to the mother and family members following the brutal killing.

“While investigations are ongoing, early reports suggest that this incident may have a mental health element to it and that underscores the need to expand our mental services and support for persons who need that and also to deepen our public education around substance abuse.

“Let us all, as individuals, keep the family and those affected in our prayers and do what we can to ease the loss that they have sustained from this terrible incident. May God bless them and keep them and give them strength and comfort as they go through their bereavement,” Golding added.

Russell also called on community members and stakeholders to commit to building stronger networks of care and intervention to protect children. “I call on all relevant agencies, faith-based groups, and civil society partners alike to work hand in hand to strengthen child protection services, expand access to mental health support, and create safe spaces for families in distress to seek help before it is too late.

“The People’s National Party (PNP) remains committed to advancing policies and programmes that prioritise family support, community safety, and the well-being of every Jamaican child. May the memory of one-year-old Ameir Saunders and three-year-old Shamair Henry compel us to do better, as neighbours, as leaders, and as a nation to protect those who depend on us most,” he added.
