Aitana Bonmatí isn’t done winning. After collecting her third Ballon d’Or Féminin on Monday night, the Barcelona and Spain midfielder made it clear: the hunger for more silverware is stronger than ever.
At 27, she’s now the first woman to win the Ballon d’Or three times and joins legends like Michel Platini and Lionel Messi as only the third player ever to do it three years in a row.
Last season, she led Barcelona to a domestic treble, dominating in Spain with incredible control. They came painfully close to an even bigger haul, falling to Arsenal in the Women’s Champions League final and seeing Spain edged out by England on penalties in the European Championship final. Still, Bonmatí walked away as the Euros’ Player of the Tournament.
The Ballon d’Or shortlist was stacked, with Bonmatí beating fellow Spaniard Mariona Caldentey and England’s Alessia Russo to the top spot.
