CIBC Caribbean is clarifying what it calls erroneous reports circulating that management has “turned off” Wi-Fi access at the Fairview branch in Montego Bay to people using it to contact relatives.

In a terse statement over the weekend, CIBC Caribbean maintained that it “would never be the bank’s intention to deny access to this critical service to anyone, especially at this critical time following the passage of Hurricane Melissa and the devastation caused.”

“We, too, know the concerns around trying to contact loved ones and colleagues at this time. Our investigations indicate that though the Fairview branch appears intact, there are challenges preventing its reopening, including telecommunications to the building, which means Wi-Fi access is intermittent at best,” added the institution.

Montego Bay sustained major damage in the aftermath of category five Melissa, which rolled through western Jamaica like a buzzsaw, shredding buildings, roads and infrastructure.
