A moment of pure magic from Bruno Guimaraes helped Newcastle United to a win at St. James’ Park, leaving 10-man Burnley with another painful defeat to digest. With the match still settling, Guimaraes stepped up for Newcastle’s first corner. Instead of curling the ball into the crowd of waiting players, he aimed straight for the far post, catching everyone completely off guard. The ball sailed untouched into the net.
Things went from bad to worse for Burnley just minutes later. Anthony Gordon slid a perfect pass through to Anthony Elanga, sending the Swede racing toward goal. Defender Lucas Pires, the last man, brought him down just outside the box and was shown a straight red card, leaving Burnley to play more than an hour a man down.
Newcastle made the extra player count before halftime. Another handball decision was checked by VAR and given, allowing Gordon to calmly convert from the spot. After the break, Newcastle searched for a third.
Dubravka did well to deny Guimaraes a second and later spared his defender’s blushes after a dangerous deflection. Burnley found a late consolation in stoppage time when Zian Flemming scored from the penalty spot following yet another handball review, but it was nothing more than that. In the end, Newcastle did enough to climb into the top half of the table, at least for now.
