Health Ministry urges Jamaicans to get free flu vaccine as peak season approaches

authorThe Ministry of Health and Wellness is reminding the public that the influenza (flu) vaccine is available free of cost at health centres across Jamaica.
This forms part of ongoing efforts to protect public health, particularly as flu cases typically increase between December and March and may continue into May, the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
Influenza is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, and close personal contact. It affects individuals of all ages worldwide. Common symptoms include fever or chills, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, cough, headache, and a runny or congested nose.
“Influenza should not be taken lightly, as it can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, blood infections, and seizures in children, and can worsen existing heart or lung diseases,” cautioned Chief Medical Officer, Dr Jacqueline Bisasor-McKenzie.
The ministry says within the public health system, the flu vaccine is prioritised for healthcare workers; children and elderly persons with chronic illnesses; pregnant women; individuals in institutional or state care; and other frontline workers. However, all members of the public are encouraged to get vaccinated.
The ministry is also encouraging private healthcare providers to obtain influenza vaccines through private distributors to expand access. Vaccination remains one of the most effective measures to reduce severe illness and prevent flu-related complications.
