With a monkeypox contagion stoking anxieties across the Caribbean, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic still has countries firmly in its grips into the middle of summer.

The region, officially hitting a sombre four-million-plus cumulative caseload this week, remains beset by Omicron subvariants, as evidenced by new infections (124,500) greatly outpacing the rate of closed cases (55,574) over the past 30 days.

Nevertheless, the Caribbean marked an impressive 100th week of maintaining mostly closed cases—with Cuba, Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Cayman Islands, Dominica, St Martin, Saint-Barthélemy, British Virgin Islands and Montserrat all recording no new COVID-related deaths for the last month.

Further analysis of regional data finds that all but one of 32 affected countries and territories have reported new cases within the last 48 hours†. Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe and Martinique rank as the five worst-hit territories in the region.

As at 2:00 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT) today (July 29), collated data from respective health departments across the region has indicated a combined total of 4,122,781 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, some 2,605,115 cases, or roughly 63.19 per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are an estimated 1,517,666 active cases regionally.

The statistics were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (2,569,350 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data out of Puerto Rico and France’s overseas territories region-wide).

In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications increased to 35,765.
