Former European 200m champion Adam Gemili has announced his retirement from athletics at the age of 32.

Before fully turning to track, Gemili spent time in the youth systems at Chelsea and Dagenham & Redbridge, but it was sprinting where he made his name. At the London 2012 Olympics, he reached the semifinals of the 100m on home soil.

The best moments in his career include winning the European 200m title in 2014 and earning a silver medal in the 100m at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow that same year. He also played a key role in Great Britain’s relay teams that claimed medals at three World Championships.

Gemili came agonisingly close to winning an individual Olympic medal, as he finished fourth in the 200m at Rio 2016 by just 0.003 seconds, and later matched that result at the 2019 World Championships in Doha.

With personal bests of 9.97 seconds in the 100m and 19.97 in the 200m, he stands among an elite group of British sprinters, alongside Zharnel Hughes and Nethaneel Mitchell Blake, to break both the 10-second and 20-second barriers.
