Arthur Fery’s unforgettable Wimbledon run came to an end after second seed Alexander Zverev stopped the British wildcard from reaching the final, but the 23-year-old

leaves the tournament with a story few expected.

Fery arrived at the Championships ranked 114th in the world and had never advanced beyond the second round of a Grand Slam. Against all odds, he battled his way into the semifinals before running into an experienced Zverev, who secured a 7-6 (7-0), 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Despite the defeat, Fery earned a standing ovation from the Centre Court crowd after a memorable two weeks that saw him carry British singles hopes deep into the tournament.

The result will see Fery become Britain’s new number one player and rise to 36th in the world rankings on Monday. He will also take home £900,000 in prize money.
