Campari holds a special place among alcoholic beverages in the Caribbean, some love it and some can’t stand it. It’s often misunderstood because it seldom follows the rules of other alcohols in the region – it doesn’t mix well with Coke or Pepsi and having it on the rocks isn’t for everyone.
Here are some of the ways you can enjoy it:
CAMPARI AND RUM CREAM
One of the more popular Campari mixes in Jamaica, particularly among women, locally called Pink P*ssy, adds a small amount of the liqueur to a glass of rum cream which often leaves a pink colour.
CAMPARI AND HEINEKEN
The next one sounds a little unusual but for some reason bitter plus bitter make something sweeter. A cold Heineken on top of Campari with very little ice really brings out all the herbs and spices in the Campari and leaves a pleasant fruity after taste. The mixing of lighter beers with Campari makes for a popular drink in Barbados and something every drinker should try at least once.
CAMPARI WITH GRENADINE SYRUP AND LIME
The next drink is another unusual suspect – grenadine syrup and a little bit of freshly squeezed lime. Not lime juice or lemon juice, old-fashioned squeezed-by-hand Caribbean limes are the only thing that makes the mix come out perfect. The lime cuts some of the bitterness from the Campari and the combination makes an extremely candy-like flavour.
CAMPARI AND TING
This drink is definitely the most popular local soda in Jamaica, Ting grapefruit soda. There are few flavours more synonymous with the region than grapefruit. Campari and Ting is a blend that brings out the best parts of each drink.
CAMPARI WITH RUM AND BOOM
The last one on the list was definitely concocted by a madman. It makes no sense, but it cannot be denied that it tastes good. Step one: mix rumpari (one part campari, one part Wray & Nephew white rum) then add the rumpari 1 – 1 with Boom energy drink. No other substitute works same and the taste is immaculate.
