Netflix’s ‘Love is Blind’ is progressively getting worse: A couples review

The Netflix series Love is Blind has managed to get progressively worse, season after season. While some are looking for love, others are simply looking for an opportunity to grow their social media platforms and doctor ‘iconic’ quotes or moments.

If you are not familiar with the series, Love is Blind is a reality dating show and social experiment, constructed to see if a person can fall in love and propose to someone without seeing them.

Men and women on the show are separated, then paired off randomly, communicating through a wall until they find someone in the pods who they wish to marry.

It is only after they propose that they meet face to face, and go through a month-long process of meeting each other’s family, living together and planning their wedding.

But, while some come to find love, others are not as serious about the experiment, and find it hard to let go of their shallow and superficial tendencies that have led to their failed relationships in the past.

I understand that marriage is not a decision that you make lightly, but participants knew what they were getting themselves into, and if they were not ready to take the plunge, they should have left the show.

But, why leave early when you can pretend to try, and get more air time on the show?

This is by far the worst season I have seen, and I just know the coming seasons will be worse.

Since I cannot go through every detail of the show, let us focus on the five couples who made it to the altar, and the decisions they made.

Nancy Rodriguez and Bartise Bowden

The pair’s relationship should have never happened in the first place. It was a disaster from the moment it began.

Nancy is a 32-year-old, whose main concern was Bartise’s age -not his manipulative, childish personality and obsession with looks, but his age.

Bartise, on the other hand, is a 27-year-old, who acted like a pre-teen for the entirety of the show.

From the moment I saw him, I knew he was just there for the hype and would not be able to put the emotional over the physical, much less to find love.

Though I have physically exhausted my brain, trying to figure out why Nancy loved him, it is quite evident that she did.

But Bartise flat out told her he did not find her physically attractive and struggled to focus on the emotional connection they had built.

He went on a whole rant, telling Nancy how attractive he thought Raven was and even went as far as to make advances towards Raven. His behaviour the entire season was completely unacceptable and he should not have been allowed to continue.

He always found excuses to disguise his lack of physical attraction to Nancy and watching his fake displays of ‘love and affection’ towards her was sickening. He never liked her and had no intention of marrying her.

I think that is why he cried when she gave him the gifts on their wedding day, because he realised he was about to hurt someone who truly loved him and he was too shallow to love her back.

I am so happy they did not get married. Nancy deserved better.

Cole Barnett and Zanab Jaffrey

Cole is also very childish and Zanab is indeed passive aggressive. The pair were an odd match, but I had high hopes they would balance each other out.

I think they had different personalities and ways of communicating, which ultimately put a strain on their relationship.

Cole was very straightforward and disrespectful with both his comments and actions, especially when he told Zanab he thought Colleen was more attractive and proceeded to make a pass at Colleen.

But Zanab was always passive aggressive and found it hard to loosen up. If Cole inhaled too hard she would complain and it was very obvious she was dying for the relationship to end.

She was also very delusional because at no point did Cole try to control her eating habits. She made her own insecurities get in the way of their relationship and often twisted Cole’s words or actions to make him the bad guy.

However, Cole was not perfect, he was disrespectful and immature, but he did not do half of the things she accused him of doing.

They were never on the same page about anything and made no actual effort to solve the problems in their relationship. They simply ignored them or danced around the issues which progressively became worse.

When Zanab gave her speech at the wedding, you could tell that she planned on embarrassing Cole at the altar. She was in no way trying to be nice about it and can be very manipulative.

Zanab is very good at playing the victim and I almost believed her. But Cole was the clear victim.

At the end of the day, I am happy they did not get married as they were clearly not fit for each other.

To me, SK and Raven’s relationship was a bit shocking. At first, we hardly saw her and SK speak, much less form a connection in the pods. Then, before I knew it, they were in love and proposing.

But, in the end, I do feel they are a good match. SK was able to bring out a side of Raven that nobody else in the pods could. He gave her a safe space to explore her emotions which I loved and the two were very intentional about how they approached the experiment.

They engaged in a lot of difficult conversations without turning them into arguments, and they were respectful of the fact that they had opposing views.

Most importantly, they did things on their own time, never rushing their relationship.

Even though they come from different ethnic backgrounds, they also made efforts to combine the two and that is commendable.

When SK said no at the altaer, I had to pause the show, and take some time to collect myself. I thought he would have been 100 per cent sure. But his reasons were valid.

In earlier episodes, Raven had said she did not want him to put his family above their relationship. I think his decision to say ‘no’ proves he is capable of putting their relationship and needs first.

Why? Because he said that if he had married Raven, it would have been because his family wanted him to and not because he felt like they were ready for the next step. This solidifies that he is working with their timeline and nobody else’s.

Their maturity, and the strong foundation they built in such a short space of time is truly commendable. These are the reasons why they were able to maintain a relationship, even after he said ‘no’.

I cannot wait to see them grow as a couple.

Matt Bolton and Colleen Reed

Matt and Colleen are probably the worst couple that I have ever seen on the show.

Colleen was so desperate to find love that, after two rejections, she married the only guy who said ‘yes’ to her. I was very shocked when she said “I do”.

To me, she only said it because she was afraid to break Matt’s heart again.

Matt was in no position to marry anyone, whether emotionally or mentally. His ex-wife cheated on him and that severely affected him. It is clear that he has trust issues and needs a lifetime supply of therapy and anger management sessions.

His ‘angry bird’ personality and inability to effectively communicate when enraged were major red flags that could be seen from space.

But, Colleen did not have the balls to run. Desperate for love, she took whatever form of it she could get, even if it was toxic.

If you ask me, Colleen was, and probably still is walking on eggshells around him, afraid to breathe or even talk to another man, out of fear he will explode. I mean, did you see how scared she looked at the reunion?

I guess you could say love is blind for the pair, because they ignored all the billboard-size evidence that showed them they were not ready for marriage, and took a gigantic leap of faith.

I only hope that jump was not off a cliff, leading to the inevitable death of their relationship.

Alexa Alfia and Brennon Lemieux

Alexa and Brennon are polar opposites, but their relationship was one of the bests this season.

Similar to Raven and SK, from the moment they met in the pods, they were head over heels for each other, and there was nothing that could stand in the way of their love.

They were the least problematic couple from the group and hardly disagreed on anything which I found strange. I was always waiting for the next shoe to drop, but it simply never happened.

At first, I took Alexa’s lack of affection towards Brennon as a sign that she did not like him, or even intended to marry him. But now I understand that she is simply not an affectionate person. She is more sarcastic and witty.

There isn’t much that can be said about this couple. But I really hope that Brennon finally got some closet space.

What are your thoughts on the couples in season three?
