Donald Trump’s Twitter account has been reinstated by Elon Musk.

Since taking over Twitter, Musk has moved to restore a number of high-profile accounts that were previously suspended.

Last week Friday (November 18), Musk posted a poll on his Twitter account, asking users of the app if they think the account of the 45th president of the United States should be reinstated.

The poll received more than 15 million votes in 24 hours and 51 per cent of respondents called for Trump’s account to be restored.

After almost two years, Musk lifted Trump’s suspension the following day. The former president’s account was first suspended due to the risk of further incitement of violence.

Supporters of the then president stormed Congress on January 6, 2021, after Trump tweeted that the 2020 elections had been rigged and encouraged supporters to march to the Capitol in protest.

Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol, defacing the building and injuring several citizens in the process.

Though his account has been restored, Trump said he is not interested in returning to the platform.

“I don’t see any reason for it,” the former president said via video when asked whether he planned to return to Twitter by a panel at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual leadership meeting.

Instead, he would stick to Truth Social, a new social media platform created by Republicans after his Twitter account was suspended.

The app launched on Apple’s App Store in February and Google’s Play Store in October of this year. With more than four million followers on Truth Social, the app has become Trump’s new way to communicate with his followers.

Musk has also reinstated the accounts for Kathie Griffin, Jorden Peterson and Babylon Bee.
